As an artist/maker, one of my biggest challenges is maintaining a consistent income — “feast or famine” is the freelance way of life… You never know when you’ll have opportunities and when you won’t. Sometimes you have to work on stuff hoping it will turn into a paid gig later. Learning to find the balance and save enough from the fat times to get you through the lean is a skill that every self-employed artist must develop; in 2016, that means not just developing time-management and networking skills, but also coming up with an innovative and unique way to get noticed by and maintaining a connection with your audience.
I’ve built an audience up over the years, and it’s time for me to try to connect directly with the people who WANT TO HELP me and help fund what I am doing. I am not looking for “hand-outs” or a one time donation to help me pay for something specific… I am also not going to give you a sob story about why I deserve your donations. That’s not really my style and you don’t want to read it anyway. If you are here reading this, you probably know who I am, or are at least familiar with what I do.
In short, I’m looking for people who are willing to make a commitment to throw me a tip — a couple bucks — once a month because they like what I do and they want me to keep doing it.
What IS Patreon?
Patreon is kind of like KickStarter, but instead of raising a whole bunch of money all at once for a single project, it helps artists like me to connect directly with their audience, and get ongoing financial support – in exchange for exclusive content, downloads and other rad incentives (…you know, along with the satisfaction and fulfillment that goes along with supporting the arts!)
What I’m Making:
As the artist/maker behind PAPERCUTS handmade (est. 2007), I make one-of-a-kind Recycled Art Journals from rescued vintage books, as well as screen-printed notebooks, mosaic picture frames, recycled magnets and other unique gifts!
It’s so thrilling to connect with other creative people and book lovers that I meet at art shows, pop-up markets, zine fairs and comic book conventions.
I love the eco-friendly aspect of what I do, and enjoy giving books that would otherwise be destined for the garbage a brand-new life. I don’t just rip the cover off and throw the rest of the book away — Smaller pieces of the book covers are turned into pocket-sized art journals featuring my screen-printed illustrations. The remaining pieces are used to create picture frames and even jewelry. The pages from of the books are carefully sorted and then packaged into one-of-a-kind PAPER PACKS and Art Journaling Kits, sorted by color and theme.
PAPERCUTS handmade doesn’t just make Recycled Art Journals.
PAPERCUTS makes everything you need for Art Journaling!
Not only do I love making Art Journals, but I believe in Art Journaling as a Movement, as a rebellion, and especially as an important part of self-care. I believe in Art Journaling as something a creative person should do for just a little while each day, to take care of their brain the same way we do yoga or go to the gym.
I have used Art Journals as a part of my own growth/development as an artist and creative individual, and with my recovery and healing process, after a toxic relationship and divorce. I believe in Art Journaling because I’ve seen it change my own life. I’m passionate about it!
I’ve already created this guide, called Art Journal Basics. It’s a hand-lettered how-to guide that will tell you everything you need to know to get started.
I want to create more guides like this one! I want to teach more people what I’ve learned about Art Journaling and self-care. I want to create an even larger community (We’ve already got 50+ members in our Facebook Group!!) of creative people who want to not just Art Journal but be a part of the Art Journaling Movement!!
I also want to be able to just make MORE art journals and send them to even MORE places all over the globe!
Everyone knows about “starving artists” and I’ve been living proof of that stereotype for longer than I’d like to admit. I’ve been making Art Journals for over 8 years now, and I’ve been publishing comics and art online for twice as long. I’ve got my “tribe” of a thousand and it’s time that I reach out and ask for help.
If you like what I do, and want to get in on the ground floor: now’s your chance. I have literally just launched, and waiting for friends & family & avid supporters to please make the first initial pledges and help me get this whole campaign off the ground!!
Please consider pledging two or four dollars a month. It may not seem like much, but it will add up and make a big impact on my life.
Thank you all for reading, and for your continued support!
Donation Levels / What You Can Get:
If you have the means to make a regular donation, and would like to support what I’m doing, you can donate $2 — or more — per month. Those donations will get you access to cool things like digital downloads, my comic archives, live streams of me making art… They’ll also mean that I can do a little less starving and a little more art-ing. Seriously, just $2 a month.
