Father’s Day Weekend

Things are finally settling down over here after a busy weekend! Tod went to Kalamazoo for the first part of the weekend to record with The Hourlies, while Jonah and I hung out at home. He came with me to work at the shop on Saturday, we went grocery shopping, watched movies and built blanket forts. It was a fun time, but exhausting to do on my own. It goes without saying, but I have so much respect for single parents.

We were both happy to welcome Tod home on Sunday morning, especially since it was Father’s Day.

Here’s a photo of Tod with his father in 1977. We took this photo of Tod and Jonah on Sunday. See any resemblance? ;)

Then we went and visited my father. We played for a bit in my dad’s back yard, then got amazing burritos at Chilango’s Grill (and ice cream afterwards!)

My little guy is growing up so fast. This summer is already packed full of activities. I know it’ll be September before I know it, and he’ll be starting Kindergarten. I’m trying to find all of the time I can to spend extra time with him right now: doing fun little craft projects, reading lots of books and playing Go Fish together.

There’ll be plenty of fun this summer and I really want to make lots of great memories before he does start school in the fall.  Who knows… maybe I’ll even get a photo of him without his tongue sticking out…

Be Right Back!

Hey friends! Blog posts may be slightly more sporadic over the next week or so. Our home Internet is out while we wait 3 – 5 days for a new modem to be shipped to us.

I’ll also be a little busier than normal this weekend, because Tod is going to Kalamazoo to record with his band. So that means it’s the adventures of Mama & the Thunder Lizard all weekend. :)

I’m sure I’ll be back in a few days with plenty to share!

Mix Tape: Feel Good Songs

Ben and I were chatting about music this morning and we started talking about “Feel Good” songs. These are all songs that are just cathartic to listen to. Some of them have personal meaning, some are just musically satisfying.

The Polyphonic Spree – It’s the Sun

The Eels – Fresh Feeling

The Beta Band – Dry the Rain

The New Pornographers – The Bleeding Heart Show

Beck – Guess I’m Doing Fine

David Byrne & Brian Eno – Everything That Happens

Photos: Pretty Lazy Weekend

It was a pretty lazy weekend and a rainy Monday afternoon.  We spent most of the weekend getting caught up on various projects. I’ve been preparing for the upcoming craft schedule, so I spent some time cutting paper down to size to be turned into Art Journals.

012

(Of course I really enjoy the cutting and sorting.)

020

We all spent time drawing in our sketchbooks. Jonah worked for a long time on this race track.

Finally, here’s Rocky, snoozing on a pile of Art Journals-in-progress…

Jonah’s Super Mario Birthday Party

092

I’m not sure what seems more impossible to believe: that these photos were taken two whole months ago, or that I haven’t shared them yet! For Jonah’s fifth birthday, we had a Super Mario themed Party. We invited family and friends as well as a few of his preschool friends.

063

I made sugar cookies shaped like Power-ups: Mushrooms, Invincibility Stars and Fire Flowers. Believe it or not, these were all made with two circle and one star shaped cookie cutters!

The Stars were my favorite. So cute!

061

My Dad printed Custom Chocolate Suckers for the party, using images we found on the Paper Mario Wiki.

039

We served a few assorted snacks, including the Toadstool Salad Appetizers I made for my own birthday party a while back.

My mom made this awesome cake, decorated with Mario Figurines that we ordered online.

After cake and ice cream, we took all of the kids outside to knock down a Chain Chomp Piñata that we made from a round balloon.

Tod created a Mario-themed “Adventure Maze” with sidewalk chalk for the kids to run through.

We decorated the house with balloons and streamers, and stuck up paper print-outs from images found online. Otherwise, the décor was pretty simple.

We also printed out coloring pages and set up an area with crayons.

Goodie bags were actually made from little Kraft Jewelry Gift boxes that were transformed into Question Mark Blocks. We gave the kids suckers and Atomic Fireballs, Super Mario fruit snacks and stick-on moustaches.

…but of course none of the kids would wear the moustaches, so mostly the adults wore them around.

Jonah had a Super Happy 5th Birthday and everyone had a great time.
