I Got a Bike! + Shop Update

007__thumb[3]

I was working at the shop yesterday, when Tod messaged me and told me he’d gotten me a surprise. I love presents but hate surprises, but my guesses proved futile and I was forced to wait until I got home to see that he’d scored me a sweet bike!

It’s a rad Huffy Rally 3-speed that he got for free(!) and is in amazing condition considering the price tag. I love the bent back handlebars and the colors and yeah.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a bike. (The last one I had was a garage sale-find from before Jonah was born and I’m not sure the tires were every properly inflated because there was nowhere to ride where we lived in Richmond. Then I got pregnant…) Not only am I looking forward to the exercise and fresh air, but it’s a very practical solution for getting around in a town that’s only about two miles long.

So yeah, I’m pretty happy with my surprise. ;)

New Art Journals + New Blog Posts

Hello, friends.

Things are shifting into place.

I want to write again. I’m going to (attempt to) be writing here again. I’ve got some big ideas (as always.) I’ve been planning some fun things for this summer.

I will probably be making some web site tweaks in the near future. That always seems to happen when I come back to blogging…

Oh! Here are some new Art Journals! Available in my Etsy Shop :

Art Journal Pages

Happy Friday! I’m back to share another round of my daily Art Journal Pages! (Check out all of my art journal pages collected here on flickr or tagged here on tumblr.)

026

I love this Thomas Edison quote. It rings very true to me that more often than not, our successes and failures are determined by our perception of our actions, rather than the actions themselves.

027

I believe that when we “grow up,” a lot of us lose an important aspect of our life: playtime! As a mama, I get access to coloring books, LEGOS, cartoons, Batman action figures and stickers (oh my god, so many stickers) and lately, I’ve been trying to set aside time to indulge in “play time,” both with and without my son.

I loved coloring in coloring books as a kid, and as an adult I find it soothing and therapeutic. It’s artistic but requires minimal effort. (Glitter crayons are the best.) Playing with Play-doh is so such nice tactile therapy; but outside of bakers kneading bread and crafters sculpting clay, there are few adult activities that offer us anything similar. Why not?

028

Just a lyrical phrase that popped into my head… I’ve been writing some songs about Time Travel, but just a line here and a line there, it’s all scattered throughout my art journals and sketchbooks.

029

Little pep talks to myself are an important reoccurring theme in my Art Journal pages.

030

I love Carl Sagan and I love this quote. Gratitude and happiness go hand in hand.

031

A little summary of what I’ve been up to lately. (Previously)

032

Tod and I were discussing this idea the other day. It’s naïve to assume that all happy, positive and optimistic people aren’t effected or don’t succumb to stress.

I liked this quote on tumblr today:

“Patient acceptance is often considered a weak and passive response to problems that we do not have the power or courage to solve. In reality, however, being patient is far from being passive. There is nothing strong or courageous in reacting to hardship or insults with anger – all we are doing is being defeated by our delusions.”

— Geshe Kelsang Gyatso – “How to Solve Our Human Problems”

Art Journal Pages

I’ve been art journaling daily again this year, although when I got Strep Throat a week or two ago, I got a little behind in posting new pages to my tumblr… I decided that I’m going to try doing weekly blog posts with my art journal pages, instead of posting the pages individually. (You can also see all of my art journal pages collected here on flickr or tagged here on tumblr.)

Daily Art Journal Pages

I really like this sentiment – as writers and artists, we frequently get ourselves worked up about “the blank white page” and seem to think we have to come up with a some amazing brand new idea, on the spot – the concept that we are really searching to “find” the idea that already exists in our head, instead of trying to start from scratch, seems so much more liberating and so much less frustrating.

Daily Art Journal Pages

As you probably already know, along with art journals, I also make 3” x 4” paper packs. On these two pages, you can see where I folded one in half, lengthwise (hot dog!), inked the edges, then glued it as an oversized tab.  I also used vintage postage stamps on both of these pages; they’re one of my favorite types of ephemera for art journals!

I also really like putting envelopes into my art journal pages so that I can keep certain things private.

This was a super fun after-school activity.

Made a Color Wheel with the Thunder Lizard when he got home from school today!

I’ve been experimenting with lots of textures in my art journal pages. This was all done with ink pads, but the effect kind of reminds me of spray paint!

I love this Tina Fey quote, too, and it seems extra fitting with the end of 30 Rock. I’m a huge fan of hers, and excited to see what she works on next.
