Surprise Lunch Date

The Mister had an unexpected afternoon off today, so I drove into town to pick him up and we took the opportunity to visit our favorite record shop, Steady Sounds.

I picked up two records. I finally got my hands on a cheap copy of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club! I’ve been wanting a copy of this album since before we even started collecting vinyl. This is my favorite Beatles album (though I think Abbey Road is a superior record, and is a close second, this one is my favorite.  It is my personal opinion that A Day in the Life is the absolute, no question, best piece of music ever composed.) and now I can finally listen to Sgt. Pepper’s as it was intended to be heard.  There’s something so magical about listening to the Beatles on vinyl.

I also treated myself to a copy of Magnetic FieldsCharm of the Highway Strip. I really love basically every song on this album, too.  Especially this one:

Then we headed over to Popkin’s Tavern for a yummy late lunch. It’s a really cool restaurant/bar that is built in an old furniture factory.

Hooray for surprise afternoon dates! ♥ ♥

Work-in-Progress Wednesday

Art Journals

This summer’s hottest accessory is… a dust mask.  Ok, maybe not. This is why I don’t write a fashion blog. ;D  I’m sanding the edges of hand cut book covers that I’ve already screen-printed.  Then they get bound together with mixed media pages to make mini art journals!

Some of the books that I use for my covers are very old, (I’ve come across some discarded books dating back to the 1930’s and 1940’s!) so a dust mask is a must. As Tod once put it, “this is exactly the sort of thing that someone on House M.D. would do that makes them catch some weird disease that no one’s heard of in eighty years.”  Better safe than sorry!

Art Journals

Here’s another look at the mini journals.

I also pulled some papers tonight for a few new full sized journals that will be bound tomorrow.

OMG, Etsy update!

OMG, you guys.  I have been feelin’ the love.  I’ve had several Etsy orders come in today (thank you!!) and one of my mini journals was featured in this gorgeous treasury last night!  Go check it out!

Art Journals

I hope you’ll stop by the shop and check out some of the new one-of-a-kind art journals I’ve been listing.  More will be coming to the shop tomorrow morning, too!

Scraped Up Knees & Papercuts

Scraped Up Knee

This morning, I was was walking down our front steps, carrying a big box containing our broken printer (more about that in just a moment) when I tripped down the stairs. I have a tendency to be a bit klutzy, but and I think I missed a step, or maybe I just shouldn’t wear flip flops.  Luckily, the box broke my fall (thankfully the printer was already broken!) and all I got was a skinned knee & a little road burn.

As for the broken printer – I want to take a minute to tell you how pleased Tod and I are with HP’s customer service & warranty program. When we got our tax return this year, we invested in a laser printer.  We got a pretty good deal on it from Office Max, however, they tried to sell us an in-store warranty for about a third of the price of the printer itself. The cashier stood there and told us that if something went wrong with the printer, that we’d have a really hard time getting it replaced by HP.

Naturally, I was in tears the night our printer actually DID break. Tod offered to take care of it and got in touch with HP customer service. He sent an email and a couple of photos to them on Wednesday, and a refurbished replacement printer showed up at our door on Friday.  All we had to do was stick the broken one back in the box and drop it off at our local Fed Ex.  Didn’t cost us a dime, and I’ve got a working printer again.  Big thumbs up to HP!  Big thumbs down to Office Max, for trying to scare us into paying for an extraneous warranty.

I’ve been spending this afternoon updating my Etsy shop!  It’s been too long (It’s literally been months, so I know I’m late to the party, but can I just say that I think the new interface is freakin’ awesome?  I especially love how all the steps are on one page now, and that I can update multiple photos at once.)  I’ll be updating all week, so be sure to check it out and take a peek at what’s new!

Jonah and Tod made cupcakes.  This look clearly says, “if you weren’t watching me right now, I would EAT ALL OF THE CUPCAKES.”

I hope all of you had a safe & enjoyable holiday! xoxo

Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

Most of us are enjoying a day off and cramming our faces full of watermelon today.  You might have seen a parade and you might be watching fireworks tonight.

I have a question for you.  Are you registered to vote?

All United States Citizens that are able should exercise their right (and duty!) to vote, whether they are a man or a woman.

It’s important that we all empower and educate ourselves, exercise our right to vote, and encourage each other to do the same.

Women have only had the right to vote in the United States since 1920. That means your great grandmother or your great-great grandmother probably wasn’t allowed to vote. Their generation fought to be treated as equals.  Every generation of women since then has continued that fight: from the right to birth control and reproductive choices in the 60’s to the right for equal pay and equal opportunities in the 80’s.  These fights are not over, and now it’s up to our generation to continue what they started.

Lately, the news is full of stories and by now, even if you’re not politically involved, you’ve probably heard about the “War on Women.”  Women’s rights to defense against rape, adequate medical care and even our right to employment are all being challenged, yet the loudest voices in the media seem to focus on the topic of abortion.  It doesn’t matter what you personally believe about abortion – emotionally charged words and issues like this are used to intimidate women, in order to discourage them from voting at all.

I’m making a careful effort to keep my personal beliefs out of this post.  What I believe is not important.

It’s not important what you believe, either.  It’s not important if you are “liberal” or “conservative.” It’s not important how old you are, how much money you have, what color your skin is or how many children you have.  It’s not important whether you’re single or married, gay or straight.

It is important that you vote. If you’re at least 18 and you’re not already registered, do it today.  You can even register online.

It is important that you educate yourself.  Read and subscribe to blogs that talk about the issues that are important to you.

It is important that you evaluate credibility. Check facts. (I like politifact.com)

Your vote is important.  You are important.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!
